If you are trying to save money on groceries, one of the easiest changes I made was learning exactly what to buy at Sam’s Club instead of Walmart. Something that really shocks a lot of people is that Sam’s Club is not always cheaper… in fact sometimes it’s considerably more expensive!!
I do not buy everything in bulk. I only buy items that are consistently cheaper at Sam’s Club and easy to store or use over time.
This simple switch has helped lower our grocery bill without extra work.
Why I Shop This Way
My rule is simple.
If it is cheaper at Sam’s Club and will not go to waste, I buy it there. If it is cheaper or fresher at Walmart, I leave it.
Sam’s Club works best for:
- Shelf stable pantry items
- Freezer friendly proteins
- Household essentials we use every week
These are the items that give us the most savings over time.
What I Always Buy at Sam’s Club
Here are the staples I consistently buy at Sam’s Club because the price is better and they are easy to store.
Maple Syrup
- Sam’s Club: $11.98 for 32 oz
- Walmart: $15.98 for 32 oz
This one is a clear savings. We go through a syrup about once a month, so buying it at Sam’s Club makes more sense. That is $4 a month in savings!!!
Honey
- Sam’s Club: $12.48 for 40 oz
- Walmart: $8.97 for 24 oz
Even though the upfront cost is higher, Sam’s Club gives much more for the price. It lasts us a long time, so this is always a stock up item. Saving $0.06 an ounce doesn’t sound like a lot, but in our house it makes a difference quickly!!
Paper Towels
We use a lot of paper towels, so buying in bulk saves money and trips to the store. Sam’s paper towels are also just superior. They are select a size and are individually wrapped so that I can throw a roll in the car or a picnic basket if I need to.
If you have a large family and pets you know how important having a stash of paper towels is. Sam’s wins here and honestly, their paper products are one of the driving factors to keeping a membership!!
Toilet Paper
This is one of the easiest Sam’s Club staples. The per roll cost is much lower, and it stores easily. It’s also THE best toilet paper. There’s not a lot of dust from the paper (unlike some other brands) and buying the enormous packs takes off a lot of the mental energy that is required when running a home.
Any time we get close to “low”… I’m talking less than 20 rolls on hand, I buy another pack.
Rotisserie Chicken
This is one of my favorite shortcuts. We use it for quick dinners, soups, and meal prep. It is cheaper than buying cooked chicken elsewhere and if I’m feeling particularly ambitious before a trip to Sam’s I’ll order a few and then pull the chicken and store it in the freezer.
This hack makes my life a lot easier on nights where I need a meal QUICK!! Hands off chicken and rice bakes are the BEST way to use this.
Milk
When we need multiple gallons, Sam’s Club pricing usually wins, especially for a busy household.
Orange Juice
Buying in bulk is more affordable and convenient since we always have it on hand. It’s cheaper per ounce here than any of the other grocery stores I have available.
Ground Chicken
This is a great freezer protein. It comes in a 2lb countainer. I throw it in the freezer and then pull it out when I know I’m going to need a fast meal (we LOVE chicken meatballs around here!)
Jasmine Rice
Bulk rice is significantly cheaper at Sam’s Club and lasts a long time in the pantry. The same thing as the toilet paper… I always know that I have rice. When you have a load of hungry kiddos, knowing I can always round out a meal with rice is a big win.
Oats
Oats are one of the best long term pantry staples. The Sam’s Club size saves money even on store brand from Walmart and reduces packaging waste.
Why These Items Make a Big Difference
Individually, the savings may not seem huge.
But over time, buying these basics at Sam’s Club instead of paying higher grocery store prices adds up.
It also means:
- Fewer grocery trips
- Less last minute spending
- A more stocked kitchen at all times
What I Do Not Buy at Sam’s Club
Just as important, I do not buy everything there.
I skip:
- Items we will not finish before they go bad
- Fresh produce we cannot store well
- Random bulk items that do not fit our meals
If it does not make sense for our family, I leave it.
Final Thoughts
Sam’s Club is not about buying more. It is about buying smarter.
For our family, the biggest savings come from sticking to a short list of reliable staples that are:
- Cheaper in bulk
- Easy to store
- Used regularly
This simple approach has made grocery shopping easier and more affordable without overthinking it.
