I don’t just run into Dollar General and hope for the best, and I definitely don’t shop there without a plan.
If I’m being honest, I’ve learned that it only really works in my favor when I treat it like a little “deal stop” instead of a full grocery trip.
I only shop there when I know I’m actually saving money compared to my regular stores like Walmart or Kroger, and that makes all the difference for our budget.
Over time, I’ve settled into a simple system that keeps me from overspending and only brings home things we truly need.
Step 1: I Only Shop When There’s a $5 Off $25 or $10 Off $40 Coupon
The very first thing I look for is one of those store coupons.
Usually it’s:
- $5 off $25
- $10 off $40
They show up pretty regularly, sometimes on Saturdays and sometimes during the week.
If I don’t have one of those coupons, I just don’t go.
That one rule alone has saved me from a whole lot of unnecessary spending.
Step 2: I Only Buy Things My Family Already Uses
I never go in trying to “find something to buy.” That’s where you can get in trouble.
I only shop for things I already know we go through at home, like:
- Dove shampoo
- Tide laundry detergent
- cleaning supplies
- paper goods
- a few pantry staples when the price is right
If it’s not something already on my regular shopping list, I leave it on the shelf.
Step 3: I Stack Digital Coupons on Top of Store Coupons
This is where the savings really start to add up.
I use the Dollar General app and clip any digital coupons for the exact products I already buy.
So if I see a coupon for Tide or Dove, I’ll stack that right on top of my $5 off $25 or $10 off $40 coupon.
It’s nothing complicated, just a little stacking that makes a big difference at checkout.
Step 4: I Always Double Check Prices Before I Buy
Even if it looks like a good deal, I always pause for just a second and compare.
Before I put anything in my cart, I make sure I am saving at least about $2 compared to what I would pay at Walmart for that exact item.
If I’m not saving at least that much, I usually don’t bother.
It keeps me from getting tricked by “sale” prices that aren’t really a deal.
Step 5: I Love a Good Clearance + Coupon Combo
One of my favorite little money saving wins is finding clearance items we already use.
If I see something marked down, I’ll check the app for a manufacturer coupon on top of it.
And if I can stack:
- clearance price
- manufacturer coupon
- and my $5 off $25 or $10 off $40 coupon
those are the trips that feel like a real win for our budget.
My Simple Rule for Dollar General
I only buy if everything lines up just right:
- I have a $5 off $25 or $10 off $40 coupon
- I’m stacking digital coupons on things we already use
- I’m saving at least a couple dollars compared to Walmart
- or I’ve found a clearance item I can stack coupons on
If it doesn’t check those boxes, I just let it be.
How Dollar General Fits Into My Grocery Routine
Dollar General is not where I do my main grocery shopping.
It’s just one small piece of a bigger system I use to feed my family well and stay on budget.
- At Kroger, I grab weekly deals and digital coupons
- At Walmart, I pick up everyday groceries at the best base prices
- At Sam’s Club, I stock up on bulk items
- And at Dollar General, I focus on coupon stacking and household deals
When I use each store for what it does best, everything stretches a whole lot further.
