I feel like a lot of the times in a busy families life, you just need to get meals on the table and overthinking is not an option! When I get into a place like this (like I have been as we’ve sold out house, and been renovating a new one over the summer!) I like to stick to the basics.
For me, the basics are ground beef, chicken, and rice. Those are ingredients that I always have on hand, and I can turn them into about 100 different dinners on the fly!
If I know that I am going to be cooking as simply as possible, I can buy those ingredients in bulk, which saves a ton of money right from the start!
By sticking to a straightforward meal, you not only cut down on food costs but also minimize food waste as you can efficiently use leftovers and ingredients across multiple meals! Saving you EVEN MORE money!!!
If you know me, I’m always looking to save money (and time, and not waste food!). So, here is my 10-day meal plan that I’m using for the next 10 days! If you want to know more about why I cook and shop on a 10 day cycle, click here! (HINT: IT WILL SAVE YOU A LOT OF TIME AND MONEY!!!)
Super Easy 10 Day Meal Plan to Start TODAY
This 10 day meal plan uses mainly ground beef (this is handy for us because we bought a portion of a beef cow from my uncle who raises grass-fed beef this year!), chicken thighs, and rice. We use a few more ingredients too, we don’t want things to be boring! However, the bulk of the meals come from those three things!
This is highly beneficial for your budget, your health and the environment!
Buying ingredients in larger quantities can offer several advantages:
- Cost Savings: Purchasing items in bulk often comes with a lower unit price. You can save money in the long run because larger packages typically cost less per ounce or unit compared to smaller ones. This is especially beneficial for staple items like rice, pasta, and canned goods.
- Reduced Packaging Waste: Buying in bulk reduces the need for excessive packaging, such as individual plastic wrappers or small containers. This can contribute to a reduction in overall plastic waste and promote eco-friendliness.
- Convenience: Having a well-stocked pantry means you’re less likely to run out of essential ingredients. This can save you time and stress since you won’t need to make frequent trips to the store.
- Longer Shelf Life: Many bulk items, like dried grains, legumes, and canned goods, have a longer shelf life than their smaller counterparts. This means you can store them for extended periods without worrying about spoilage.
- Customization: Buying in bulk allows you to portion ingredients to your liking. Whether you need a small amount for a single meal or a larger quantity for a family gathering, you have the flexibility to adapt to your needs.
- Supports Meal Planning: Bulk buying supports meal planning and preparation. You can purchase ingredients in quantities that align with your meal plans, making it easier to stick to a budget and avoid impulse purchases.
- Access to Variety: Many stores that offer bulk sections have a wide range of products, including specialty items, organic choices, and unique spices. This variety can help you explore new foods and flavors.
- Less Frequent Shopping: Buying in larger quantities means fewer trips to the store, which can be particularly advantageous in situations where the store is far away or when you have a busy schedule.
- Emergency Preparedness: Stocking up on essentials in bulk can be beneficial in emergency situations, such as natural disasters or unexpected financial challenges, ensuring you have a food reserve to rely on.
- Supports Local Farmers and Producers: When buying in bulk from local farmers or producers, you can establish a direct relationship and support the local economy. This can also lead to fresher and more environmentally friendly food options.
However, it’s essential to consider storage space and the shelf life of the items when buying in bulk, as well as your actual consumption to avoid waste. Careful planning is key to reaping the benefits of bulk buying while minimizing any potential drawbacks.
