Rosy loves books. Seriously. She has shelves of books in her room, she knows them all. We have a basket of books in the living room, they each have a name. There’s another basket of books in the dining room, you could mention a book that’s in it and she’ll run and dig it out!
Her loving books has been a really intentional thing. Considering the fact that she can’t read, I have read each of her books to her about 107 times.
As she’s gotten older, I’ve found that a good combination of books that she can “read” by herself (she’s memorized all of the words), and books with more words keep her super happy. It’s really cool to watch her attention span lengthen and ability to take in information grow!
We’ve added a few books recently to her normal rotation and it’s working out really well!
Five Great Books for a Toddler
If You Give a Pig a Pancake
We were given this book just before Rosy turned two. It has been a favorite ever since then! She thinks it’s really funny, and can even entertain herself by just looking at pictures for a long time.
I really like that it teaches the concept of repeating a string of events and logic. It makes sense why each of the next thing is happening, and learning predictability and probability is an important skill.
Princesses Wear Pants
This book was a gift to us at Rosy’s baby shower, and it was a great one! She just got interested in it whenever she turned two, and now I read it to her about 452 times daily.
Not only is it a really cute book with great illustrations, it has a great underlying story too–that girls can do anything they set their minds to!
It rhymes, so she’s able to finish reading most of the pages on her own. It’s also a book that she is content to sit and look through on her own for a long time! This one is definitely a car ride favorite. If she has her “princess book” as she calls it, we don’t hear a peep out of her until we get where we’re going!
The Wonkey Donkey
Okay, when my mom gave this book to Rosy about a year and a half ago, I was not a huge fan. However, as she’s gotten older, this is a great book! She finds it super funny and loves to read portions of each page to me.
It’s mostly just a silly book that teaches basic rhyming! She loves it!
Dr. Seuss’s ABC Book
This book has been a favorite for a while, but it is SO good for learning the alphabet and letter sounds! Who doesn’t love a good Dr. Seuss book? It has great pictures and catchy phrases for each letter.
Our favorite is the R page because there is a little girl named Rosy riding a rhinoceros! It’s a great book and teaches letters and rhyming! It’s tons of fun to read too!
ABC What Can She Be?
This one was a gift from my sister and Rosy has loved it since she got it! It is another book that teaches the alphabet, but it also teaches about different careers too! Not only does it support that girls and women can do anything, but it has great pictures of each job that Rosy really enjoys!
Her favorite might be the veterinarian page because she points out all of the animals!
There’s also a boy version of this book, ABC What Can He Be?
If you’re anything like us, you’re always looking to expand your library and add more books for your little ones! These are 5 great ones that would make wonderful gifts to toddlers you know, or additions to your at home book collection.
